Homemade Electrolyte Drinks

Are you tired, bloated, feeling puffy, constipated, thirsty after drinking lots of water, have muscle aches and pains, sore after workouts, muscle cramps, skin breakouts, random eye twitching or pregnant, nursing or busy with kids? You may benefit from making your own mineral water.

Minerals like magnesium (Mg), Potassium (K), Sodium (Na), and Calcium (Ca) help your body to make energy, enzymes, and hormones.

Unfortunately, stressors (physical, emotional, mental) increase our "burn rate" of minerals. You may be getting minerals from food but stress, inflammation, infections, high doses of vitamin D, water filters that remove minerals, and even agricultural pesticides like glyphosate could be depleting it.

Make Your Own Beverage!
Where’s the calcium? If nutrients like magnesium, K2, vitamin A, and vitamin D aren’t in balance, calcium may go to the wrong places (e.g., kidneys, arteries, hair) Calcium supplements can cause buildup in soft tissues. Testing via Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) and blood labs is the best way to assess if deficient in calcium. Unless you want to toss in some quality milk or leafy greens, skip the calcium supplements unless properly tested for.

FAQ

"Can I use magnesium on my skin?"

Yes! Topical versions include: Magnesium lotions, Oil sprays, Epsom salt baths

“The drink is making me feel worse. Why?”

Cut out the magnesium for 4–12 weeks. Prioritize sodium and potassium first, then add magnesium slowly. It may be a sign your cells need sodium and potassium more urgently.

“Are mineral safe for pregnant/nursing women and kids?”

Yes! Strongly encouraged. Pregnancy and nursing drain your mineral stores. You can dilute recipes for kids.

“How can I test for minerals?”

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) + some blood labs.

“What if I’m on medications?”

Talk to your doctor. Especially important if you take potassium-sparing meds, blood pressure meds, or have kidney issues.

“Isn’t that a lot of sodium?”

If you eat a lot of processed/junk food, maybe. But for most, mineral salt is necessary and beneficial, especially with whole food diets.

"What if digestion changes occur?"

If you start the mineral mocktails and get loose stools, try the following:

  • Remove the magnesium

  • Use magnesium glycinate instead of magnesium malate

  • Cut the dose of everything in half and slowly increase as tolerated

  • Try a different recipe

  • Remove or reduce cream of tartar (it can act as a laxative)

  • Reduce aloe vera if using it (it can loosen bowels)

Best time of day to drink it?

Whenever you’ll be most consistent

Morning is great to front-load minerals

Some find it helps with sleep if taken before bed

Can you take too much?

Most people benefit from 1–3 mineral mocktails per day

Does Himalayan salt work?

It does, but Celtic salt and Redmond’s Real Salt are preferred. They minimize trace amounts of heavy metal.

What’s the difference between mineral mocktails vs adrenal cocktails?

Differences are in dosages, ingredients, taste, and price

Adrenal cocktails are a specific mineral blend with whole food vitamin C

Can minerals make my acne worse?

Minerals can affect detox systems and shift other minerals (like iron). A temporary purge is possible

What’s the best form of magnesium?

Magnesium glycinate and magnesium malate

You can use capsules if you prefer

Magnesium bicarbonate is also a good option

If my house has reverse osmosis (RO) water, should I add minerals?

Yes. It strips minerals. Even without RO, most people need more minerals than food and water provide

Why the Aussie brand of trace mineral drops?

  • Variety of minerals

  • Heavy metal testing
